Plant Care Guidelines

Adaptation and Pollination:  Zones 4 through 8. To determine your climate zone, see the map in Plant Climate Zone Map.

Soil:  Any good, deep, well-drained soil. pH 5.5 to 8.0.

Fertilizer:  Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer according to label directions.

Water:
How much: Apply enough water to wet the soil 5 to 6 feet deep. To determine the proper amount of water for your soil, see How Much Water to Apply. Avoid wetting the trunk and crown of the tree by watering into a basin that keeps the water at least 4 feet away from the trunk.

How often: Water when the soil 6 inches below the surface is just barely moist.

Pruning:  Walnuts form on the current season's growth. Prune trees lightly, removing weak, diseased, or dead twigs and branches. Thin the inside of the tree if the growth is dense.

Harvest:  In the fall, the nuts drop to the ground. You may hasten nut drop by striking the branches with a rubber mallet or cloth-covered stick. After removing the husks, spread the nuts one layer deep in a shaded, well-ventilated location to dry.
